The final activity of “Our Memories and I” project took place in Split, Croatia, from 07-09th of May, and was hosted by the Culture Hub Croatia - Platform for Education, Creativity and Development through Culture. Eight partners coming from France, Spain, Germany and Italy together with the project coordinator European Observatory on Memories (EUROM) from the University of Barcelona came to Split to share their experiences of the 2-year project and learn about memory policies and challenges in history education in Croatia.

The first day of the meeting, on Tuesday 07th, the participants will had the opportunity to discover the city of Split and enjoy the festivities of Saint Domnius, its protector. On the next day, a public conference was organized at the Alliance Française entitled “Youth, remembrance and creativity”.

It served to disseminate the results of “Our Memories and I” project to a wider public. We also welcomed the interdisciplinary artist from Berlin, Roman Kroke who has been working with students from high schools involved in the project, using art to interpret difficult histories and foster mutual understanding. His creative workshops have been the central part of the project and have significantly contributed to its overall success.

At the same time, a pop-up exhibition opened in the Alliance Française in which the photographs and stories from these workshops were shared. Several professors and researchers: prof.dr.Aleksandar Jakir from the University of Split, prof.dr. Tomislav Oroz from the University of Zadar and Petra Vidovic from the Goethe Institute, Zagreb, talked about the Croatian context of dealing with the past and interpreting memories. In addition, artist Antonio Grgic showcased his work on memories in public spaces.

The last day of the meeting, 9th of May, was dedicated to a closed evaluation meeting in which partners discussed the quality and success of the project worked on the planned publication as well as on preparations for the final report. Beginning of afternoon, a field trip with a guided tour was organized to visit the fortress of the city of Knin and its Memorial Museum with a special focus to the museological representation of the action Storm 95’. The aim of the visit was to understand the challenges and difficulties of interpreting very recent memories of the Croatian Homeland War.

This final meeting and the conference were a useful learning experience both for international partners as well as for local history teachers and others interested in the subject including artists. It contributed to the impact and sustainability of the project through initiating new ideas for future collaborations.
